Hands on in Reception Maths!
We’ve been very busy in our first 8 weeks in Reception consolidating some of our early number work we may have learnt at Nursery and taking our subitising and pattern spotting into all of our areas of provision! Here’s just a tiny snapshot into what we’ve been up to!
Games of dominoes to practise our number recognition.
Jonathan working on his snakes and ladders game – writing the digits all the way to 43!
Outdoor pattern exploration!
Maths City Reward Trip – Competition
30 lucky Year 6s spent the morning at Maths City yesterday as the prize from a Maths competition at GSAL before the summer. The children had a fantastic morning accompanied by Mrs Stott and Mrs Bentley. There was time to explore the different areas before the children came together to build a Leonardo Dome.
National Maths Challenge
This afternoon 8 fantastic Mathematicians from Years 4 and 5 took part in the National Mathematics Challenge area heats. Relying on team work and fast mental maths they worked in 2 teams to beat the quizmaster.
Year 5 perimeter investigations
The power of manipulatives in Year 5…within 5 minutes of using our manipulatives in today’s lesson we had already addressed children creating area instead of perimeter, leaving gaps between cubes and creating a square with completely equal sides.
Hands-on Maths is a super power!
Primary Maths Challenge – Bonus Round
We finally received the certificates for the Primary Maths Bonus round this week. Well done to those children who took part and a special well done to Harrison who won a bronze award!
Keeping an eye on the progress of the running track
Year 4 have been out supervising the builder’s on the field today. Can you guess what they are building?
We found out that we would have to run around this 8 times to complete our ‘Daily…’
Measuring the length of a whale shark!
In our Reading this week we have been looking at sea creatures including whale sharks. We thought it might be best to get outside and measure out the 20m a whale shark can grow up to. We were amazed at the size and horrified at the thought of it heading our way with its mouth open wide!
Year 4 Cuisenaire rod exploration
Before beginning our Fractions unit for Year 4 we have been exploring the relationships between different Cuisenaire rods. It was really interesting to hear lots of the Maths talk around the room ‘This one is equal to two of the green rods.’. ‘I notice they all equal the same amount when you put them together.’
This was really useful to get children thinking about fractions as equal units and the concept of wholes of different sizes.
