In our Reading this week we have been looking at sea creatures including whale sharks. We thought it might be best to get outside and measure out the 20m a whale shark can grow up to. We were amazed at the size and horrified at the thought of it heading our way with its mouth open wide!

Year 4 Cuisenaire rod exploration
Before beginning our Fractions unit for Year 4 we have been exploring the relationships between different Cuisenaire rods. It was really interesting to hear lots of the Maths talk around the room ‘This one is equal to two of the green rods.’. ‘I notice they all equal the same amount when you put them together.’
This was really useful to get children thinking about fractions as equal units and the concept of wholes of different sizes.
Night light creation!
In Year 4 we have been creating night lights today as our D&T of this half term. We did some product research; considered our target audience and designed our prototypes. We then gathered our resources and got stuck in with feathers, beads, paper, card and paint!
An Amazing Year 6 trip to Maths City!
Today, 12 amazing Mathematicians from Year 6 went with Mrs Tatam-Hall and Mrs Ebrahimi to Maths City in Leeds City Centre.
We had an incredible time exploring all their fantastic exhibits.
We worked together to build an enormous Leonardo dome which we were able to sit under and then destroy together!
Allerton Leeds Sumdog contest winners!
Year 3 fought the good fight at the weekend making Allerton CE the top scoring school in Leeds for both Saturday and Sunday – congratulations Year 3!
Year 1 Maths Games workshop
Yesterday evening 12 children and their adults joined us to play some Maths games and have a cup of tea! We loved playing the hoop game, rolling long play dough sausages, drawing 10 lovely things and representing numbers in different ways. Maths at home doesn’t have to be tricky, boring or on worksheets!
AimHigher Maths Day
4 of our Year 4 children spent the day at Ireland Wood Primary on Thursday working on their ‘Maths Magic’. With a focus on efficiency they were working on the quickest ways to get to the answer along with lots of puzzles and magic games. The children had a fantastic day and a big thank you to Mrs Howard for going with them!
A big welcome to our STEM students from the University of Leeds
We are so lucky to have 3 fantastic Maths and Chemistry students from the University of Leeds who are volunteering with groups of children across Key Stage 2. Our focus with these students has been to inspire and enrich the learning of those children needing challenge, particularly girls in those later years.
Year 1 Maths Games night
On Thursday evening, parents and children from Year 1 joined us in the school hall to play some games, have fun and hopefully take some ideas home with them! Thank you so much to those that joined us – we hope you had a lovely time!
Primary Maths Challenge
This last week some of our strongest Mathematicians across Years 4-6 have been having a go at the first round of the Primary Maths Challenge. It’s been fantastic to see them really testing themselves in the face of tricky reasoning. Mrs Bentley has been kindly facilitating this.
