Usually at this time of year, we turn our attention to Geometry. You’ll know Geometry as shapes and angles.
This game is always a class favourite in Year 6. It offers you an opportunity to improve your ability to estimate angles. You can either play on your own or challenge somebody else!

I sometimes take shortcuts to help me with times tables. For example, to find 6x a number I first do 5x followed by adding one lot on. So to find 6 x 7 I would do:
5 x 7 = 35
Add one more lot of 7 to 35 = 42
= 6 x 7 = 42
…BUT calculating 7 x 8 or 8 x 7 was always really tricky for me… Until I found this funny song a few years ago which made me and my class laugh and help us remember!

A fantastic counting song for younger children, which is very fitting at the moment. Maybe you have a younger or brother or sister you could share it with?

Gareth Metcalfe has kindly provided daily online lessons for children across the country. We use Gareth’s Maths resources in school, you will have seen them on our challenge boards!
Here are the first two lessons:

You can make your own rules for this game, but here are some my class decided on in case you are stuck:
Before starting the game, the counter is placed on zero and a target number is decided on (usually between 20 – 30).
Each player takes turns to move the counter along a line to a number. Every time the counter is moved, the new number is added to the previous total. For example 0 to 5 = the total is currently 5.
You MUST move the counter along a line from one number to another.
The players MUST add the score up mentally (in their heads) as the counter is moved.
Whichever player reaches the target number first, wins! You could change this rule, so that the player that reaches the number first loses!
Finding keeping track of the adding tricky? Make your target number lower.
Finding it too easy? You can make the game trickier by setting the target number higher. What is it like to play with three players?
You can download and print the game from here: https://nrich.maths.org/1216
